A slower pace predominates in this mainly pastoral area but the towns of Parthenay and Niort have their attractions and are a good place to sample the département’s specialities. Niort is renowned for angelica, a culinary herb grown in the Marais Poitevin.
If you’re heading for the marshy lands of the Marais Natural Park stop off at Niort to fill the picnic hamper.

The Marais Poitevin Regional Park known as "Green Venice"  is a beautiful conservation area of marshes, channels and waterways, through which the Sèvre Niortaise meanders. Packed with a wealth of flora and fauna, there are over 3500 acres of wetlands with hundreds of canals, big and small. The area can be explored in a variety of ways – on foot, bicycle, guided boat tours and canoes. On the higher ground, picturesque whitewashed villages like Coulon provide a base to explore this lush and pastoral area.
